Borealis festival 2013 ::: Notations project documentation film
Commissioned by Ultima festival for Ultima Academy 2013
Artistic director Alwynne Pritchard will be giving a presentation of the Notations project on Monday September 9th at 15.00 at Ultima festival, Oslo. More info on Ultima Academy
The Borealis 2013 Notations project was inspired by Theresa Sauer's "Notations 21" book, a collection of seminal classic and newly created graphic scores. Inspired by John Cages's 1969 "Notations" publication, "Notations 21" explores extended musical notation, ranging from new approaches to stave notation, to scores that make of instructions, colour, photography, collage and other means of visual expression.
With this in mind, Borealis initiated its 2013 Notations project, bringing together people from diverse disciplines to collaborate on creating and interpreting new musical scores, all of which were performed and exhibited throughout the festival. Together, they explored what the possibilities for musical notation might be in relation to expressing imagined sounds, specifying performative actions, exploring acoustic space and extending the relationship between composer, performer and audience.Scores were specially created for the Borealis 2013 Notations project by visual artist Andrea Spreafico, clinical psychologist and former Borealis festival volunteer co-ordinator Anders Ohnstad, students from the Bergen Architecture School Kasper Gulbrandsen, Bjarte Baade Sandhal and Haavard Tveito and students from the Bergen Academy of Art and Design, Amber Amblett, Jacob Alrø, Stacy Brafield, Benedicte Clementsen, Lona Hansen, Susann Jamtøy, Tatiana Lozano, Clara Morell, Malin Peter and Leo Shumba with Pedro Gomez-Egana.
The aim of this film is to encourage other artists and organisations to initiate more projects that explore the possibilities for developing graphic and other forms of extended musical notation.
