The Grieg Academy is a vital part of Bergen’s musical infrastructure and Borealis works closely with them each year to help inspire the composers and performers studying there, and to draw on their musical expertise and experience. This year we have programmed a concert, performed by the students of the Grieg Academy under Ricardo Odriozola, featuring work from across the spectrum of Borealis’ featured composers surrounding an expanded piece of chamber music from veteran Bergen composer Ketil Hvoslef. Hvoslef’s Kammerspill for Wind Quintet, String Quintet, Piano and Two Percussionists, will be joined by a piece for solo voice by Danish composer Simon Løffler in which the singer battles against herself, and an increasingly chaotic confrontation between labels and willpower called The Colours Don’t Match for voice, piccolo, clarinet, violin, percussion and electronics by American composer Natacha Diels. In between the pieces will be realisations of the American experimentalist Joseph Kudirka’s Odd Objects, a collection of solo and group activities that will appear as interventions within the concert framework.
Presented in collaboration with Griegakademiet.
