After the concert: Closing party!
As a relentless touring musician and collaborator, South Korean-born cellist Okkyung Lee has found space to compose a music that harnesses the energy of her solo performances, and transfers the sonic complexities of her world to ensembles of musicians. With recent ensemble commissions being performed at the White Cube in London and at the Donaueschingen Musiktage, the music vacillates between dense and lighter harmonic textures. Okkyung’s composition draws on the same insistent investigation of the consistency of sound as her performances, mixing elements from her Korean heritage with her Western classical training and noise. For the closing concert of Borealis she will compose a new work and be joined in a quartet to perform it by three players who have been part of the festival in other projects – Chris Corsano on drums, Angharad Davies on violin and Rhodri Davies on harp. Coming together with the audience at Landmark for the final celebration of music-making at this year’s Borealis, the boundaries between audience and performers, composer and improviser will begin to dissolve.
