David Hackston is a countertenor, described with "stunningly precise delivery radiating into eerie, endlessly mutating clusters at once heavenly and hellish" by music journalist Peter Margasak. He is a long-standing member of internationally renowned Helsingin kamarikuoro (Helsinki Chamber Choir), and sings in numerous ensembles exploring polyphony – multiple independent melodies – from the 14th century onwards. David has a particular interest in 16th-century Portuguese polyphony, music that he regularly performs and records with Arte Minima from Porto in Portugal.
Parts of his repertoire include operas, such as Flash Flash by Juhani Nuorvala, and Clemency by James Macmillan. He is also an avid performer of contemporary music, with countless world premieres behind him, and the recording of Kaija Saariaho's Ècho!, which in 2024 won a Grammy Award for Best Choral Performance.
