Tuomas Toivonen is an architect, musician and artist, who also operates the renowned public bath and cultural space Kulttuurisauna in Helsinki. His music output spans over four decades and various collaborations, as vocalist, ensemble player, electroacoustic musician and producer. Whether its the consistent metropolitan pulse of Giant Robot’s album Raft of Medusa or his architecture lectures over house beats in the record Urbanism in the House, field-recorded near-silent performances of In the forest, I tell my child, we should stop and be still, or the slow meditative journeys with free jazz players on Turhaan erotti kaukonäköinen jumala – there is an underlying insistence on the capacity of sound and words to change how we see, feel and understand the world around us by arresting and modulating our perception of time, space and context.
