Bergrún Snæbjörnsdóttir

Bergrún Snæbjörnsdóttir is a composer from Iceland with a master’s degree in composition from Mills College, California, where she studied with Zeena Parkins, Fred Frith, and Pauline Oliveros. She currently lives in Reykjavík and has been assistant professor of composition at the Iceland University of the Arts.

Her approach to composition often integrates sound and other elements into unified, flexible structures, exploring experimental performance practices and notation. In her research, Bergrún is particularly interested in control — how to create a space that allows individual expression while shaping the overall outcome in different performance settings.

Her works have been commissioned by leading ensembles and festivals, including the International Contemporary Ensemble, Iceland Symphony Orchestra, National Sawdust, INA GRM, and Prototype Festival. Other ensembles that have presented her music include Oslo Philharmonic, Ensemble Musikfabrik, Esbjerg Ensemble, and Norrbotten NEO.

Snæbjörnsdóttir is currently working on a concert-length choreographed flute septet with Björk’s flute ensemble viibra and choreographer Margrét Bjarnadóttir, to premiere at Reykjavík Arts Festival in 2026.
