Johan Sara Jr.

Johan Sara Jr. is a composer, musician, and innovative performer rooted in one of Europe’s oldest song traditions, the Sámi joik. Born in Alta and raised among reindeer herders on the vast, snow-covered tundra, he grew up in a culture where nature shaped every aspect of life and where joik held a central place. Today he is based in the small Sámi village of Maze in Kautokeino, continuing to work from a landscape that remains central to his artistic thinking.

Although internationally recognised for his unique approach to joik – merging traditional expression with contemporary sonic elements – his work spans beyond any single genre or form. Sara has composed music for ensembles including choirs, chamber orchestras, bands, film, and theater. His music has been praised for its hypnotic, meditative quality and its ability to feel both ancient and strikingly present. For Sara, joik is not simply an artistic method but a legacy: carrying forward the sounds of wind, tundra, animal life, and stories passed down through generations.

Across his projects, Sara seeks to reconnect listeners with the natural world and a sense of inner stillness that modern life often obscures, inviting audiences into a sound world that reconnects the listener with the slow pace of the natural world, where listening itself becomes an act of reflection and restoration.
