Live Sunniva Smmidt is a cellist from Trondheim. She trained at the Norwegian Academy of Music and NTNU, and completed a master’s degree where she explored the relationship between the cello and her own singing voice. Through work with improvisation, early classical music, and new compositions, she investigates how the voice can color the cello playing, and what the two can contribute to each other—both as a method, in solo performance, and in collaboration with others.
Smidt is a versatile chamber musician who, in addition to the classical field, is active in several contemporary, improvisation, and jazz ensembles, and enjoys working at the intersection of genres and disciplines.
She regularly performs with TrondheimSolistene, the contemporary music ensemble SiTron, and the Trondheim Symphony Orchestra, and participates in several theatre productions, including Trøndelag Teater and in collaboration with Kompani Spring and Spreafico Eckly. Smidt is also engaged in music education for children, and has toured kindergartens with the solo project Tonen på havets bunn and the performance Flagrende sommerfugl together with jazz singer Jakob Nordli, both featuring music that combines original material and improvisation.
