Join SHYBOI for a unique Borealis X Utmark that kicks off with a Dub Sound Bath at Bergen Kunsthall. The New York based multi-disciplinary artist, DJ and researcher from Kingston, Jamaica, is well known for heavy bass mixes under her SHYBOI DJ moniker, but for this special Utmark X Borealis evening she opens the night with a similarly heavy but more immersive experience. Drawing on her research into Dub music as a mythologising technology, SHYBOI creates a sensory immersion, where in a room of light and scent, old dub records are re-dubbed live using a combination of effects and processing, invoking what acclaimed Guyanese writer and essayist Wilson Harris called “an orchestration of imageries and histories to take us through and beyond ourselves into the music of space, incandescent space and rhythmic space.”
Following the Sound Bath, SHYBOI turns up the temperature for a long overdue festival dancefloor moment, joined by Bergen local and Klubb Diaspora resident DJ Love Pump aka Liliana Palanca, playing bass music from Africa and the diaspora – from kizomba to kuduro, baile funk to afrobeat. Local DJ Collective The bucket Djz takes over the desk with their passion for South African music and fashion playing amapiano – a hybrid between deep house, jazz and lounge music.
