A night of new music from Norway, Sápmi and the UK for the Norwegian Naval Forces Band (NNFB), in the epic setting of the 12th Century Bergen Cathedral.

Sámi composer and musician Herborg Rundberg returns after an acclaimed performance at Borealis 2024 with duo Leagus, bringing her musical voice that combines classical and jazz education with a Sea Sámi tonality, to the soundworld of the military band in her Borealis commission; bárru bára.

Composer and saxophonist Jason Yarde has worked with everyone from contemporary music stalwarts London Sinfonietta to drum and bass pioneers 4hero, and last appeared at Borealis as part of Elaine Mitchener’s powerful work SWEET TOOTH in 2020. Flexing his compositional muscles for 2025’s festival, he draws on his own experience of almost joining a military band as a young man, and dives into the life stories and passions of the players in the NNFB today.

Opening the evening is a dynamic work, Modes and Moves from Kari Beate Tandberg, a prolific Norwegian composer whose highly crafted work translates visual impressions and impulses into vital colourful music.

Presented in collaboration with The Norwegian Naval Forces Band & Birgon ja biras sámiid searvi
